Met Office latest as snow hits Greater Manchester amid 15-hour warning

by · Manchester Evening News

The Met Office has issued an update on what Brits can expect as wintry weather moves in. Autumn will take a cold turn with freezing temperatures tonight (November 18).

A 15-hour yellow weather warning for snow and ice is now in force until 10am on Tuesday. It covers much of the North, including Greater Manchester, plus some areas of Scotland, Wales and the Midlands.

In an update, the Met Office says snow is most likely to fall on higher ground. Up to 20cm of snow is possible in some areas, forecasters say.

Snow has already begun to fall on higher ground in Greater Manchester, including in Saddleworth. The Met Office says: "A period of rain, sleet and snow will occur during Monday evening, overnight into Tuesday morning.

"The most likely scenario is for most of the snow to accumulate on hills, with 5 to 10 cm possible above 200 metres and perhaps as much as 15 to 20 cm above 300 metres. There is a chance of snow settling at lower levels, where 5 to 10 cm would prove much more disruptive - this remains uncertain, but seems most likely across parts of Yorkshire and Derbyshire.

"As rain, sleet and snow clear on Tuesday morning, ice may form on untreated surfaces." The Met Office is also warning people to prepare for chilly temperatures overnight.

The North West is likely to see temperatures around -1C. Meanwhile, parts of Scotland could see temperatures plummet to as low as -8C overnight.
